Soap What?!?

Soap What??

“What are Soap Nuts?” you may be asking. Well, it’s just the best laundry detergent ever and extremely economical.  Soap nuts are not actually nuts but a berry produced by the Wu-Huan-Zi (mukorossi) tree. In water, the soap nut (soap berry) releases saponin, a natural surfactant which works to break up dirt, grease, and grime. Soap nuts contain the highest content of saponin among all the plants which makes it extremely effective natural cleanser.

Originally, Soap nuts have been used in China for thousands of years as a detergent, cosmetic, and medicine. It is a 100% natural and chemical free alternative.  The awesome thing about these soap nuts isn’t just how thorough they are at cleaning my laundry, but they also leave them softer!   I’ve been using soap nuts for over 18 months.  I spend about $25 for a 2.5 lb bag of organic, seeded soap nuts and that bag will last us for a whole year!!

To use, we put 4 “nuts” in a little linen bag and that bag is good for 4 washes.  We have 3 bags so we can rotate through our laundry (you want the soap nuts to try out between loads) without having to wait.  You can also make a liquid soap out of the soap nuts.  Just put a quarter pound of berries in about 2 cups of water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for  30 minutes – and voila’, you now have liquid soap you can use for either laundry, dish soap or all purpose cleaner.  It’s so very simple, very economical and effective – what’s not to love?!

There are many places where you can find soap nuts. I buy ours on Amazon.com from Greenwill. Greenwill’s soap nuts are from genuine mukorossi tree which make them rich in color, and have more soap content. Their berries are completely natural, where no pesticides, insecticides, chemical additive, or any artificial mediums are ever used.
Next time you need to get more laundry detergent, remember you do have options – and this might be the best choice for your family, just like it’s been for mine.
